Build Instant Rapport. Gain Trust. Attract Opportunity
How often you walk into an room and immediately feel that you are out of place or wondering will you be able to meet some interesting new people at this place?
Do you want to be able to build instant rapport and attract opportunity when meeting new people at event ?
Here are 5 practical tips that I find and I hope are useful for you to enjoy your next networking event.
1. Fact Finding
Find out what is the event all about, who will be the likely attendees and check out the dress code. With this information at least you can start a conversation with anyone at the event by sharing the background information about the event, the host and the guests.
2. Dress for success
First impression counts ! People rely a lot on what they see. So remember to dress according the dress code as stated in the invitation card. People forms their perception about you within 2 to 5 seconds when the first meet you. So if you dress well, chances is others will be attracted to know you.
3. Be genuine when connecting with people
If you want to build instant rapport with anyone, be genuine when you connect with him/her. You might have your reason to network i.e. to get contacts for business. However remember people like to deal with genuine people. You recall how you make friends in your school days? You make friends by simply just wanting to have friends to spend time and do things together. So start by really want to make friends at the event. You will be amazed the paradigm shift will help you to connect with others naturally and at ease.
4. Tell people what you do in a sentence.
People in networking activities are looking for right matching. If what you do is what he/she needs, you presentation will immediately become interesting. Practice at home how to explain to people what you do in one sentence. People will read you for value to them in a few second.
5. Remember People Names
You have to remember other people names. The name of people whom you just met. This is the most fundamental thing to do to show your respect and care of that person. I know some of you may say you are not good at remembering people's name. No excuse, this is the rule of the game, just take it as it is.
Always end a meeting with a new friend in a positive note by sharing you enjoy the conversation much and it was a pleasure to meet him/her. If opportunity render you a follow-up meet after the event, do exchange contact to keep in touch. You must walk away feeling good and enjoy your time in the event.
Networking is social activities that is a pleasure to enjoy. So enjoy yourself the next time you are at a social event !
